LML Duramax Repair for CP4, DEF and Emissions Faults
LML Duramax repair usually starts with one question: is the trouble in the CP4.2 fuel pump, the DEF and SCR side, or the DPF and EGR? A fault in one can trip warnings in another, so we test which one is actually failing before anything gets ordered.
What GM put on the LML, and what it costs you later
The LML took over from the LMM for 2011 and ran through 2016. The Garrett variable-geometry turbo will look familiar to earlier Duramax owners. The fuel and exhaust hardware will not.
GM swapped the Bosch CP3 for a CP4.2 pump and added diesel exhaust fluid and SCR. Those are two systems earlier Duramax owners never had to think about. The bottom end is rarely the story, and we can convert your LML to the more reliable CP3 pump.

Every warning light tied to that fluid is new territory for owners coming from an LBZ or LMM.
What an LML does when something on it is failing
The dash message starts the search. The test picks the part.
| What you notice | What it often points to on an LML | First thing we check |
|---|---|---|
| Long crank, no start, or dies on a pull | Rail pressure the CP4.2 cannot hold, air in the supply or a leaking filter head | The filter for metal, then rail pressure |
| DEF message and a speed countdown | Bad fluid, a DEF heater or pump fault, or a NOx sensor reading wrong | Fluid quality, heaters, NOx readings |
| Regens that come back to back | Extra soot from an injector, the EGR or the turbo | Soot load, then the upstream cause |
| Coolant dropping with no puddle | An internal leak, often at the EGR cooler | A cooling system pressure test |
| Rough idle, smoke, a knock that was not there | An injector sticking or leaking back | Balance rates and injector return |

The pump every LML owner has heard about
The CP4.2 is lubricated by the diesel running through it. Water, air or poor fuel wears it, and a worn pump sheds metal into the high-pressure side, toward both fuel rails and all eight injectors, and back to the tank through the return.
So a failed pump is treated as a fuel system job until testing proves otherwise, and the fix we recommend is a CP3 conversion. Failure stages, codes and what gets replaced are on our Duramax CP4 pump replacement page.
- Hard start or no start after the truck sat
- Rail pressure codes, or dying under load
- Glitter in the fuel filter at a service
- Fuel weeping at the pump body
If there is metal, it is already too late for the pump. Stop cranking it, because every restart pushes debris further. Tow it in.

Pick the one that sounds like your LML
How the truck is used changes where we look first.
A new-to-you LML with an unknown past
You do not know how the last owner fueled it or whether the emissions parts were ever touched. We start with the fuel filter, stored codes and the DEF and DPF systems.
- Fuel filter cut open and checked for metal
- Stored and history codes pulled
- Emissions parts in place and working
Long climbs with a camper or a trailer
Miles of uphill load keep rail pressure demand high and push heat into the Allison and the cooling system. A weak part that gets by around town shows itself halfway up a mountain pass.
- Rail pressure logged under real load
- Transmission fluid condition and temperature
- Coolant level, fan and cooler airflow
Frozen mornings and short trips
DEF freezes near 12 degrees Fahrenheit, so the LML heats its tank and lines. A failed heater stays quiet until the first hard freeze. Short winter trips also cut regens short.
- DEF heater circuits tested, not guessed
- Regen history and soot load
- Glow plug and starting checks
A fill-up that went wrong
Water, gasoline or dirty diesel is the fastest way to hurt a CP4.2. Do not run it to burn through the tank. Tow it in and we check how far the damage went.
- Fuel sample from the tank
- Filter and pressure regulator for debris
- Injector return and rail pressure

I can’t say enough good things about Bodacious Diesel. They’re team is knowledgeable, honest, and incredibly thorough. They took the time to explain exactly what was going on with my truck, gave clear options, and never tried to upsell unnecessary work. The repairs were done right and at a fair price. You can tell they genuinely care about their customers and take pride in their work. If you’re looking for reliable diesel mechanics you can trust, Bodacious Diesel is the place to go.5 STARS
What moves the price on an LML job
The same code can mean a cheap sensor or a whole fuel system, so the price follows what testing finds.
| Cost factor | Why it matters |
|---|---|
| How far CP4.2 debris traveled | Pump alone, or rails, lines and injectors too |
| Which emissions part failed | A sensor and a DPF are very different invoices |
| Upstream cause | A new DPF on an engine still making soot will plug again |
| Shared labor | Jobs in the same area cost less done together |
Before you bring the LML in
Most LML work is drop-off, and we price the repair once diagnosis shows what failed. A few details on the first call help us start in the right place.
- Year, mileage and the exact dash message
- What you were towing when it started
- Where and when you last fueled
A DEF countdown can usually be driven to the shop. Metal in the filter or steady coolant loss cannot.
Drop-off, diagnosis and the now-versus-later call are laid out on our what to expect page.

LML questions owners bring to the counter
The ones we hear most before an LML comes in.
Not every one does. Many run a long time on clean fuel and filters changed on schedule. Water, air and bad fuel raise the odds, but some fail on clean fuel too. To protect the pump, we can add a FASS fuel system, or replace the CP4 with a CP3 in a clean conversion.
Drive it to the shop, not on a trip. The countdown ends in a reduced speed limit, and fresh fluid will not fix a heater, pump or sensor fault. On the DEF side we start with a fluid quality test, then the heater circuits and NOx sensors.
No. We do not do delete work. Our LML Duramax repair work keeps the DEF, SCR, DPF and EGR systems in place and working.
The Allison six-speed automatic. Heavy towing heats it, so a shift complaint gets a fluid and code check first. A shift complaint does not automatically mean a rebuild; testing shows whether it is fluid, a solenoid or internal wear.
Diagnosis typically takes 24 to 72 hours depending on workload. After that, LML Duramax repair time depends on the job: a sensor can be quick, while a contaminated fuel system waits on parts, and we tell you before you approve anything.
