Duramax CP4 Pump Replacement for 2011 to 2016 LML Trucks
Duramax CP4 pump replacement on a 2011 to 2016 LML is rarely just a pump swap, because a CP4.2 that comes apart can send metal through the rest of the fuel system. We confirm the failure, find out how far the debris went and tell you exactly what has to be replaced before a wrench turns. For most LML owners the better answer is a CP3 conversion: the CP4.2 comes out and the more reliable Bosch CP3 goes in, with a conversion kit built for the LML. The pump GM put on the LML, and why it has a reputation
The CP4.2 is the Bosch high-pressure pump on the 2011 to 2016 LML Duramax, and the LGH version of the 6.6 shares the same pump. It turns supply fuel into rail pressure for the injectors.
The CP4.2 has no oil bath of its own. Diesel fuel running through it is what lubricates and cools its internals, so water, air or poor fuel in the supply cut into that protection. When it wears, it sheds metal, and that metal leaves on the high-pressure side, downstream of your fuel filter.
Every generation is on our Duramax repair page, and the rest of the LML story lives on the LML Duramax repair page.

One failed pump, a whole fuel system to inspect
The fuel filter sits ahead of the pump, so it cannot stop metal on its way to the rails and injectors. Here is where that metal goes.
- Into both fuel rails, one per cylinder bank, which feed every injector
- Through the high-pressure lines to all eight injectors
- Back through the return side to the tank, where it waits to be pulled through again
That is why a new pump bolted onto a contaminated system can become the next failed pump. In rare cases a pump seizes hard enough to burst its aluminum housing.
"I can’t say enough good things about Bodacious Diesel. They’re team is knowledgeable, honest, and incredibly thorough. They took the time to explain exactly what was going on with my truck, gave clear options, and never tried to upsell unnecessary work. The repairs were done right and at a fair price. You can tell they genuinely care about their customers and take pride in their work. If you’re looking for reliable diesel mechanics you can trust, Bodacious Diesel is the place to go."Scott Campbell, Google review
What an LML does when the pump is going
Some point straight at the pump. Others turn out cheaper, so we test first.
| What the truck is doing | What it often points to |
|---|---|
| Hard start or no start | The pump cannot build rail pressure at cranking. A weak lift pump or air after a filter change can mimic it. |
| P0087 or P0088 | Rail pressure is too low or too high compared with what the engine computer asked for. The code does not say which part caused it. |
| P0191 or P128E | P0191 means the rail pressure reading does not make sense for what the engine is doing, and P128E is GM's rail pressure performance code. A failing CP4 sets both, and so can a bad sensor or wiring. |
| Metal glitter in the filter or on the regulator | The pump has started coming apart. Stop driving it and call. |
| Cranks, starts, then dies or loses power under load | A pump that cannot hold pressure once demand goes up. |
| Cracked housing or fuel on the pump | A pump that has failed outright. It is rare, and you will usually see or smell the fuel. Do not start the truck; call us. |
Where your truck is decides what the job includes
Pick the one that sounds like your truck.
Pump conversion before it fails
This is the least expensive point to deal with a CP4. After an inspection you decide: keep driving with good fuel and filters changed on time, or replace the pump before it can take the rest of the system with it.
- The filter and pressure regulator for early metal
- Desired versus actual rail pressure on the scan tool
- Water or air in the supply side
Pressure codes or a hard start, no metal yet
A pressure code does not automatically mean a new pump. If the pump is at fault and no debris got past it, the repair stays small.
Our diesel injector repair page covers how we test injectors.
- The supply side and lift pump
- The pressure regulator
- The rail pressure sensor and its wiring
- Injector return
The pump has failed and shed metal
Now the job is the pump plus everything the debris could reach. You see every part on the list before it is ordered.
- The CP4.2 pump
- Both fuel rails and the high-pressure lines
- All eight injectors
- The tank and supply lines, drained and cleaned so leftover metal does not reach the new parts
How a Duramax CP4 job runs in our bays
Same sequence every time.
Confirm the failure
Codes, freeze frame data and desired versus actual rail pressure on OEM factory scan tools, plus a supply side check.
Look for metal
Cut open the filter, inspect the pressure regulator and check the pump body.
Replace what was reached
The pump, and when debris is found, the rails, lines and injectors it traveled through.
Prime and prove it
New filters, a full prime and bleed, then a drive watching rail pressure under load.
Why one CP4 job costs far more than another
The price of a CP4 job is set by what testing finds.
What drives the cost
- Whether metal stayed in the pump or reached the rails, lines and injectors
- Whether the injectors have seen debris, which on a contaminated LML usually means replacing all eight
- Cleaning the tank and supply lines
- Other repairs on the same teardown that save labor together
What Colorado adds
A pump that struggles to build pressure on a frozen foothill morning can start fine all summer, so a winter hard start deserves a look before it becomes a no start.
Load is the other test. Towing up a mountain pass holds rail pressure demand high for miles, which is exactly when a marginal CP4 sets a code. If you find metal in the filter, have the truck brought in rather than driving it.
What to expect when you drop it off
CP4 diagnosis is drop-off work, typically 24 to 72 hours depending on workload. If the pump job puts other work within reach, we tell you before parts are ordered so you can decide while it is apart. Nothing is done without your approval. The full drop-off process is on our what to expect page.
Ford owners with a 6.7
The 6.7 Powerstroke runs its own version of the Bosch CP4.2, with the same fuel-lubricated design and the same failure pattern. See our 6.7 Powerstroke repair page, and for other platforms, diesel injection pump repair.

CP4 questions LML owners ask us
Straight answers before you bring the truck in.
Not once it has failed. A failed CP4 sends metal through the fuel system, so the fuel system gets replaced along with it. We recommend converting to the more reliable CP3 at the same time so it does not happen again.
The 2011 to 2016 LML runs the Bosch CP4.2, and the LGH version of the 6.6 shares that pump. The LB7, LLY, LBZ and LMM use the Bosch CP3, and the L5P uses a Denso pump. The 6.7 Powerstroke runs its own version of the Bosch CP4.2, with the same fuel-lubricated design and the same failure pattern.
Hard starts or no starts, codes such as P0087, P0088, P0191 or P128E, and metal glitter in the fuel filter or on the pressure regulator. Any of these deserves a test before a pump is ordered.
Diagnosis typically takes 24 to 72 hours depending on workload, and the truck needs to be dropped off. Repair time after that depends on whether the job is the pump alone or the full fuel system, and on parts availability.
That is your call. Replacing a healthy pump costs a fraction of replacing a pump, both rails, the lines and all eight injectors after it lets go. If you tow heavy up I-70 or rely on the truck through Colorado winters, have it inspected and decide with real information.
